COVID-19 NOTICE: Bawd Hall is open for business.  From 14 September, it will be against the law to meet people you do not live with in a group larger than 6, so guests should limit their parties accordingly. We are following the "We're good to go" industry standard and have a risk assessment in place and a process to maintain cleanliness.

Cycling holidays at Bawd Hall

Bawd Hall is the ideal base for a cycling holiday. The Lake District contains many recognised cycle routes and Lake District cycling holidays are becoming an increasingly popular way to experience the dramatic landscape:

  • great rides straight from the door, from a gentle pedal around the Newlands Valley to a strenuous day’s cycling over mountain passes.
  • four bathrooms, all with a choice of bath or shower, to clean up and refresh afterwards;
  • plenty of space for bikes in the lockable garage;
  • large lounge and garden room to gather in and share the experience;
  • utility room equipped with washing machine, plus a large drying room with a tumble dryer, in case you want to wash your clothes;
  • central heating throughout (and an open fire if you want it);
  • maps, books and internet access to plan your activities.

The most famous cycle route is the C2C or coast to coast. The route travels through the northern Lake District close to Bawd Hall and over the Pennines. C2C is not a clearly marked cycle route but employs roads, old railways, and bridle paths combined with unspoilt hills and countryside to provide a truly exhilarating cycling experience.

For those who prefer good summer’s day rides as a way to see the lake district, then:

  • the Derwent Water and Crummock Water routes provide an excellent way to view the lakes and provide perfect picnic days;
  • Cockermouth to Bassenthwaite is an unspoilt and secluded route and provides great views of Bassenthwaite lake

There are also excellent custom-made mountain bike routes at Whinlatter:

  • the Altura Trail puts the mountain back into biking and has been built for experienced riders with good off road skills and a higher level of fitness and stamina. The trail is a 19 kilometre red grade mountain bike route which includes 15 kilometres of single track;
  • the Quercus Trail is 7.5km long with a shorter 3.5 km option. It is a gem waiting to be discovered, expect flowing single track with gentle berms, rolling jumps, wide gradual climbs with technical features for the adventurous riders.

There are a number of places to hire cycles, or have them mended, should you require.
